Is it normal to have a heavier period?

i started my period today and normally i dont have to change my tampon so soon, but after only 5 hours it was full and leaking. is this normal? my period normally isn't usually this heavy, i mean i am sick with bronchitis or a cold or something along those lines, but would that affect it? i mean i am not sure why it is so heavy this time
