Chair covers/Overlays?

We're having a pretty casual reception. It's at a hotel (Hilton), and we're having a band. It's a fun band; not the $10,000 wedding band I wanted (before I found out the price!). So, will it look too formal (out of place) to have chair covers w/ sashes? Otherwise, maybe just an overlay and nice centerpiece on the tables. I showed my dad a picture of a banquet room w/ chair covers/sashes and he said it looked too formal. So he is biased...it's his money.
