Newborn wants pacifier upside down?

Ok my grandson is 9 days old and for some reason he will not take the pacifier unless you give it to him upside down. Its obvious his little nostrils are covered up by the pacifier so we turn it back the right way, he then spits it out and crys???? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
