Has Vista improved?

Am an oldie wishing to buy a new computer and wish to know what problems exist on Vista Home machines. Is it mainly compatibility with software or what other problems exist. Would like straight forward answers to these questions. I would like to buy a high end gaming machine and wonder whether this would alleviate most of the known problems.
